Who they areSugarflies was started in October '94 as a three-piece band. It was meant to be an outlet where emotions from our daily lives could be expressed. They started off with a garage-pop kind of sound, raw and unpolished, relying heavily on strong melodies rather than instrumental efficiency. They released their first demo "Somethings Happen, Somethings Don't..." in November '94. Two songs from that demo, "Doll" and "Baby Song", entered Chris Ho's 8 Miles High Countdown. "Baby Song" was also featured on the Mee Pok Man soundtrack as "Be My Baby".
After a few months and several gigs, the lineup for the band had its first change, subsequent changes prevented them from recording their demo in 1995. Patrick Chng, drums, and Evan Tan, bass, were roped in as replacements and this lineup recorded two songs for Springroll in early '96. One of the songs, "Yoshiki", was featured in the "Dazed and Confused" compilation which was released in November '96.
Through the years, their brand of music has not changed much, songs are still written depicting our everyday emotions and still rely on strong melodies, flamboyant technical play is seldom heard. Basically their music is not mainstream, neither is it too alternative that their appeal is limited to only selected individuals. June Koh, songwriter and guitarist, believes that the songs she writes are radio-friendly but definitely not commercial.
